Belle lever en dejlig tilværelse med sin far og to søstre. Søstrene går mest op i smukke klæder og beundrere, men selv er Belle optaget af bøger og at dagdrømme. Da hendes far er nødsaget til at ride afsted og bliver fanget i en snestorm, må han overnatte på et mystisk slot. Her bor et Udyr, som er forbandet til sin uhyggelige skikkelse, indtil han møder ægte kærlighed. Belle får øjnene op for Udyrets indre kvaliteter, og ser ikke længere kun hans uhyggelige ydre. Tiden truer med at tage alt fra Udyret, men kan mødet med Belle redde ham?
